I first encountered Print on Demand services when a friend of mine told me about Blurb. He intended to use it to print up some art portfolios and I was immediately intrigued.
Later, when I was looking to get my sister's book The Cupid Factor published, I came back to Blurb. Quickly I discovered that they weren't the right venue for a text-only offering, so the search continued. It led me to Lulu.
That was exactly what I needed. I could set up the book in a page-layout program, upload it and pretty much be done with it. I was very impressed with the quality of the printing and the professionalism of the entire workflow.
Still later, I decided to open up a Cafepress shop to sell some designs printed on various apparel and gift items. I came to really enjoy learning about the different processes employed by the various Print on Demand websites.
I've found that most of the time, the ideas that we have can be realized with very little upfront money. But the real payoff from these offerings comes from investing your own hard work.
