A Song of Ice and Fire - off to Video Game Land

I caught wind of this from this article on Ars Technica.

To me, this was one of the best stories out there now in the Fantasy genre. I had my problems with the last book, A Feast for Crows, but I still hold a pretty high regard for the story. That means that a video game adaptation is something I have a little trepidation towards. I was burned before with that Wheel of Time game years ago...

Anyway, more important than the article itself, was actually the comments. Quite a few were upset about the length of time it has taken for GRRM to come out with the latest book. It has been almost four years now, I believe.

I'm frustrated as well, but from working on my own writing and artwork, it's easy to understand the time it takes to get things done. Admittedly, writing is his full-time job, and people like me have a day job and the writing/art gets done in whatever spare time is left over. However, there's really no way to tell what is taking so long.

Hopefully he's taken the fan criticism of the last work to heart and is making sure that the latest outing will make up for it. So all this time spent could be just him perfecting the story, although some took issue with him putting out other novels and short stories in the meantime.

Sure, I want the next book, but we can't chain the guy to his desk (can we?). It's quite a testament to his writings that fans really are that upset that they haven't seen the next book. If he disappeared and nobody noticed or cared that would be the worst situation of all.

According to Amazon.com (U.S.), the fifth book - A Dance with Dragons, is due out this September 29, so more like October probably before you get your hands on it, unless you're a first day kind of buyer.

If I recall correctly, he was aiming for 6 books at this point, so we'd be looking for one more book, hopefully sooner than 3.5 - 4 years later.

But, to get back to the video game: I hope this one is an "open-world" type of game (think Grand Theft Auto, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, etc.) where I can head up to the Wall (and past it), or I can head over to the ruins of old Valyria or the Iron Islands. If there's some multiplayer involved that would be even better.

There's no definite word on when this might hit, so here's hoping it's good when it does finally come out.
